Foe Reality
This is a juveinalian satire story that attacks the contribution of social media to serious issues like sex trafficking. The context of the story addresses how easy it is to deceive others from behind a screen. There is an extreme juxtaposition between the reality and the created fantasy through social media.
Ballerina
Life is simply a dance. Maybe not a ballet piece, but more of a Jazz or contemporary. We all dance for some odd reason-whether we like to or not. We all put on a performance when we don't need to. So even though I stopped twirling on stage, I still find myself twirling at home, at school, or even when I'm writing- trying to find answers to some of my biggest questions about humanity.
Insomniacs Lament
I started writing during those sleep deprived hours, and the pieces I produced were some of my most vulnerable. These poems are designed to put you in the same emotional and mental state I found myself in at the times they were written.
Undone and Transitions
The piece I chose to submit is two individual poems. They’re very loosely connected, and I didn’t intend for people to view them as a collection, though they have similar themes and motifs.
Is That Child In Actual Danger
“Is That Child in Actual Danger” is a dark comedy about ignorance; a reflection of society and a satire of drama, reminiscent of the many Saturday Night Live gameshow sketches.
Getaway Car
A young girl confronts her father's violent secret and must choose between him and her childhood.
Moths, What Is Fate, Seer
My artistic process is healing. I write to express all the things I never could say out loud. My creative writing forces me to examine the rough and raw parts of myself and turn them into gold, something that can be used to further both myself and society. When I write, I embody the voices of those told to shut up, be small, and take up less space.
Not the Same
This short piece is about a subtle form of racism that I experienced in first grade that I never really understood until I was much older.
Swirling Water
My piece, Swirling Water, seeks to capture the entirety of that aspect of high school life. The story itself is directly inspired by my own experiences. Immediately after I returned home, with an enormous weight lifted from my shoulders, I put the experience to paper.
Perfection Screams a Weary Name
I come up with ideas of what to write primarily through observation. I drown out the constant bombardment of information and focus on the niches in daily life, such as the angle of the sunlight or the faint humming of the refrigerator.
Stuck Apart
Writing also allows me to feel pride in what I previously thought were painful or unnecessary thoughts. When I am able to write down my words on paper I can see the beauty of my own mind.
13c? Flash Fiction? Letters to Frances
I wrote this piece in hopes of connecting the music side of the world to the writer's world, with both arts and emotion.
In My Head
I wrote this poem mainly as a way to come to terms with the manipulation I had to deal with growing up.
Image By You encapsulates every challenge that is completely unique to our generation. It metaphorically elaborates on the ways that social media has warped our “images”of ourselves through the subconscious manipulation of our concept of beauty and self worth.
Patrick & Joe
These two poems are an examination of the glorification of psychopathic men through film and television. They creatively showcase the reality of these characters and communicate the disturbing nature of the way they are presented to audiences.
