Patrick & Joe

Gloria M.

  • These two poems are an examination of the glorification of psychopathic men through film and television. They creatively showcase the reality of these characters and communicate the disturbing nature of the way they are presented to audiences. While writing both of these poems, I immersed myself in the words of Patrick Bateman and Joe Goldberg. Throughout the writing process, consistently listening to the American Psycho audiotape and watching the show YOU allowed me to get into the mindset of the type of man I was trying to imitate in the first poem. I chose this concept because I wanted to communicate the reality of coercion and sexual abuse in real life and dismantle the romanticization around being “stalked” and having an obsessor. In the second poem, I drew from my personal experience with toxic masculinity and experiences with men to provide a narrative centered around an extremely narcissistic and charismatic individual that abuses that ability to manipulate.

  • Creativity means using everything available to me to create my artwork. It means stepping outside of my comfort zone, my computer, and my head to utilize the world around me. Creativity is the core of self-expression and the fuel for everything I create.
