Winter Water
Following recent deaths in my family over the past couple of years, I saw the different ways grief impacts people. For me, and others too, it happens at night, when my body is exhausted and ready to sleep, but my mind isn't.
I Want to Be a Backseat Driver
This piece was inspired by a "Parallel Universe" assignment, where I took a big moment in my life, learning how to drive, and wrote it from a different perspective (my father's) and different time period (30 years in the future).
Dry / Sunrise
For my poem "Dry", I was largely inspired by the death of my grandfather, and my fear of forgetting the little details about him as time goes on.
iris; a venomous contagion
This is a piece I wrote after I went a school dance, with someone I thought had cared about me, only for their true colors to shine through that night.
I Was Never There
This sad yet happy flash fiction is told through the eyes of someone you least expect it from. I wanted to write something that came from an unexpected perspective and didn’t necessarily have one meaning.
Shattered and Broken Windows
My story is about a young girl who wakes up one morning and everything seems off. She goes downstairs and everything is gone. Even her parents. She calls the police but they're no help. They don't see what she's seeing. Is she going crazy? Is she hallucinating? What's going on?
What is Friendship & Board Game
“What is Friendship,” is written as a piece of advice to those in school. I went for the idea of appreciating who you are and finding people who support that.
Poetry
In my poetry and prose, no matter the topic, I always focus on time. The primary subjects of my writing are things that are often considered fragile or disposable under the influence of time: natural life forms like flowers that wilt and shrivel with age, alongside women, who are valued more or less in society depending on how old they are.
Untangled and Jade
A short story in which Jade encounters Untangled, a being traditionally known by her folk. While she should be terrified of this entity, Untangled is the one who leaves horrified.
Number Twelve Bus
The assignment in my Ethnic Studies class was to write a poem or song about what identifies you. I chose to write about my grandpa because I don’t usually write about family and lean towards school or friends. My grandpa was important to me because I got to spend a lot of time with him as a kid and we created a bond through my childhood.
Ocean Lullaby
The ocean is like a second home for me. Each year, my family travels around the world, and somehow, we always end up near the ocean.
Life After Loss
You will grow into someone new, into a person you need to be. You will grow back plentiful and healthier than before.
3 Poetry Shorts: Intruder, Suitcase: A Tool for Encasement, and Breaking Up with Home
These submitted works of creative writing are under the section of poetry, where I have selected three pieces that show my variety in perspective and ability to capture contrasting genres.
My Story Shapes My Dreams
My creative piece is inspired by a school club called Human Rights Through Art and Literature I created last year. In the club, I led interviews with two refugee girls who fled from Turkey to Greece due to the political climate.
Intruder Drill
I sometimes struggle with intrusive, obsessive thoughts. After being hit by a wave of these thoughts one day, I decided to describe my experience in the hopes of revealing a narrative to which others might relate.
