My Story Shapes My Dreams

Serra T.

  • My creative piece is inspired by a school club called Human Rights Through Art and Literature I created last year. In the club, I led interviews with two refugee girls who fled from Turkey to Greece due to the political climate. My poem features their experiences: how they fled by boat, having to leave their belongings and loved ones behind. Both girls are now in Germany, building on their hopes and dreams. They both emphasized how their experiences have shaped who they are today. Through my poem, which highlights the formative, emotional nature of their experiences as young girls, I hope to touch the hearts of broader audiences in an effort to amplify their voices and communicate their stories.

  • Exploring and expressing my creativity is a way for me to look through the perspectives of others. I sympathize with a particular group/individual to be able to put myself in their shoes and communicate their stories through art in a way that can touch a broad audience.
