What is Friendship & Board Game

Saahi V.

  • "What is Friendship,” is written as a piece of advice to those in school. I went for the idea of appreciating who you are and finding people who support that. While writing this poem I had some difficulty trying to get into the rhythm and it limited some of the words I wanted to use. Nonetheless, I looked back at the main issues from when I was in a friendship that didn’t fit me. The main issues I found were: being judgemental, talking behind each others’ backs, and not being trustworthy. The group I was in was quite obviously toxic. Through my poem, I want to emphasize that friends should support one another. Friends should be able to confide in one another and everyone deserves friends that appreciate one’s qualities, both good and bad. I included my personal experience and thoughts along with a final stanza that reaches out to the reader and empathizes with them. I used the last stanza as a PSA to show that everyone is appreciated and special. Everyone deserves friends around them that can stay by them through hardships.

I decided to use the metaphor of a board game in order to explain the difficulties of life. In the first stanza, I represented God giving everyone a random life. Each person comes to Earth with a different financial and home situation. Moving forward, I explain how everyone has different successes. There are people who seem to be on top of everything, moving ahead at high speeds. Yet, there are many who end up in tough situations and need to work hard only to get the smallest of success. Additionally, all our choices come with effects. Every choice leads to something and based on your decision, this could be good or bad. Nonetheless, you should never give up. It takes hard work to reach your goals and once you reach them, aim for something higher. This poem is something that I hope to live by. It uses a simple metaphor to explain the things many see as the unfairness of life. Rather than looking at the negatives, it’s great to learn and grow from people who have success. You can’t choose the life that you are born into but, you can choose the life you want to live. You can choose the path you want to take for your future.

  • Expressing my creativity is an escape from reality for me. It allows me to have time for myself and my feelings; both good and bad. Exploring these different areas of art and finding creativity helps me center myself and become a better person in general.
