Giovanni Sollima- Lamentatio

Casey K.

  • Lamentatio, composed by Italian cellist Giovanni Sollima, challenges the classical interpretation of music. Instead of conforming to the orthodox applications of the cello, Sollima introduces the voice as well as rock instruments such as the drums and electric guitar into the piece. When I played this piece, I tried to portray the fragile, sorrowful nature of the human soul through vocals that pierce through the ethereal chords in the cello. As the piece develops, I brought out the ”drum” in the piece by accentuating the characteristics of the drum and electric guitar, especially including the percussive elements found in the pizzicato section, where we see a 2 against 3 rhythm. Through such characteristics I tried to illustrate the depths of human emotion.
