Unforgettable

Natalie F.

  • My artwork was developed with acrylic paints and a canvas. I created this piece after the passing of my beloved grandmother in order to illustrate the bond we had, and still have, together. My grandmother is depicted sitting on the steps while I stand in the distance, admiring her presence. There aren't any other subjects captured in the scene, it is only a matter of her and me. I hold the hat she is wearing, reminiscing the great memories we had together, accepting the fact that the median in which we communicate our love for another will never be the same. I used a lot of negative space in this piece to allude the impression of a void in time. Similarly, in many parts of my piece I heightened the contrast by using more concentrated blacks and whites. My grandmother's figure was intended to be the center of the piece: it is the most colorful and contains the most highlights.

  • Painting is an outlet for me to confront my strongest feelings and emotions. As a Highschool student, my academic performance oftentimes sways my self-image. Despite the volatility of my identity, art is a tool for me to humanize myself by depicting my true, unfiltered self in a creative manner.
