Self Portrait

Sarai J.O.

  • This painting in acrylic was one of my initial but favorite paintings utilizing a canvas. After learning about Diego Rivera, I decided to take a similar approach to paint portraits but I wanted to make this one as realistic as possible. I loved exploring skin tones and enjoyed being able to mix so much utilizing acrylic paint. For the background, I wanted the theme to be something around "new beginnings" which is why I decided to add the water component to both the background and the face as well. I also incorporated colors that tried to be realistic rather than abstract as I also wanted to portray the theme of reality. Overall, this whole process was really fun as it allowed me to take a step further in appreciating who I am as an artist and individual in the communities I form a part of especially after the recent pandemic.

  • Expressing and exploring my creativity allows me to communicate my message to multiple people at once in different ways as it allows room for interpretation. After often dealing with so much stress, art allows me to relax while doing something that I have always considered productive.
