Miso

Audrey G.

  • This piece speaks to my brother's affinity for Asian cuisine. Food has stood as the main connection between not only us, but our culture and sense of identity as Asian Americans. Cooking has often been the language used to speak with all of our relatives both here and back in The Philippines. Like many first, second, and even third-generation immigrants, there is a sense of otherness within America, coincidentally, a longing to connect to a culture that, at times, may seem somewhat distant. Featured in the drawing is my brother, eating from his favorite bowl, which my Lolo handed down to him. The yellowish tones of the noodles eventually fade into the figure as they are being consumed, showing how this food is more than a meal; it is a part of him. The flow of the painting highlights how this is not just about the food alone, but the process of making and eating it. Through the color and looseness of this piece, I hoped to convey a sense of warmth and connection between his mind, body, and the noodles.

  • Creativity is a language by which I can interpret, interact, and rationalize the world around me. Actualizing my voice through painting is a way for me to gain a deeper understanding of who I am and who I hope to be.
