Mirror, Mirror...

Gabriela T.

  • Growing up, I have always struggled with my body image as a young girl influenced by others in my community and social media. Our society tends to promote "beauty" as being skinny and thin with no imperfections on our body like stretch marks. This morphed my mindset growing up and made me think I was less than and that my body was less than beautiful. My artwork displays this inner struggle as myself, along with others I have spoken with, tend to look at a mirror and morph how we look because of this negative mindset. I named it "Mirror, Mirror..." in reference to the Snow White quote, "Mirror, Mirror on the wall whose the fairest of them all". The Evil Queen focused so much on her vanity leading to her targeting Snow White and letting her evil intentions consume her. This connects to how vanity and perfection, as emphasized in our society, results in the how we perceive ourselves and affect our actions. With my artwork, I hope that it speaks to anyone struggling with their body image and acknowledges the common struggle shared among many in our society, letting them know that they're not alone.

  • Exploring and expressing my creativity allows me to have an outlet in my life whenever I need to express my emotions and cannot be relayed through my words as I specifically use drawing and painting for my artistic expression.
