Memories and Dreams

Through the work I wanted to accurately represent parts of my mind. Each element in the work illustrates thoughts, feelings, memories and dreams of mine. I have struggled a lot in my life with mental health, and my OCD often characterizes the way that I think. I organize my thoughts in bubbles to some degree, and try to keep my mind in order. However, this is difficult and can be frustrating to control, as parts of my mind will escape. I illustrated this by confining some aspects of the drawing to the bubbles, and allowing others to escape the confines of the orbs. Throughout the work I pushed myself to change the way that I draw aspects, delving into abstraction and ink smudging that I would have otherwise never done in a final piece. Between the several concept sketches I did, some parts remained the same and some constantly changed. I kept the octopus, the bridge and the eel from the first sketch, whereas I changed the upper part of the illustration right up until the final work, switching to improvising (which is again something I never would have done in a final art piece otherwise). While the artwork pushed me in my art-making, it also forced me to think deeply about the way that I organize my mind and why things feel the way they do. In the work I wanted to open up my thoughts and mind to the viewer so that they may see a little bit of what it's like in my experience, while also giving the viewer a change to think about their own thoughts and memories and what they mean to them.

My goal is to use art to bring to life stories, practicing it in my studies and then pursuing it in my career. As an illustrator, I’ve found that there is no limit to the possibilities that are always present when it comes to the things art can convey. I use my work to bring stories to life.
