lucky scars

Thy L.

  • My piece, titled "lucky scars," is an effort to chronicle both my parents' and my experience as Vietnamese-Americans. The background is a collage of American newspapers from around the time of the Vietnam War and the red butterflies are made out of red envelopes used in traditional Vietnamese celebrations. Both the butterflies and envelopes represent luck, hope, and prosperity in our culture. I wanted to bring those feelings and contrast them against the terrors and trauma of the Vietnam War, showing how our history impacts us even today.

  • Expressing myself through creative means, whether poetry or visual art, allows me to recontextualize my experiences in ways that also challenge my artistic skills. It is both advocacy and catharsis, and it allows me to transcend cultural and social boundaries when sharing my art with others.
