Let the Silent Killer Be Revealed

As a Stanford ALC Join Jade Ambassador, my goal with this piece is to spotlight hepatitis B (HBV) in a public context through accessible art. Through the mode of evocative artwork, I seek to embody the feeling and dynamic states of combating disease with awareness and dispelling stigma. The title of the piece, depicted in bold brush calligraphy, «????,????» (Yinxíng shashou, ràng ta xiànshen), is tethered to the motif of the “silent killer:” Hepatitis B often shows no symptoms until serious conditions, so there is limited awareness among those who have Hepatitis B.
Inspired by the Wesley Tongson exhibit at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, I integrated traditional Chinese brush painting methods with fine ink work. «????,????» pictures the liver scarring (cirrhosis) that may occur with liver infection. The bold calligraphy is matched by the fluid tones in the illustration, as well as the message I impart: let the silent killer be revealed.

I experiment with creative forces as a form of meditation and find colorful hope in connecting with fellow artists. In vocal performance, painting, photography, among other mediums, the arts stretch and challenge my worldview. I relish the exhilarating state of flow and process of improvisation.
