Breaking Through

Sheri L.

  • This ceramic piece was a combination of exploration and experimentation. I was given the task to make a hand. No rule, just make a hand. Since I am still a beginner in ceramics, I had no idea how to start off. It took forever to sketch the perfect hand, and plan out all of the details. I intended for this piece to symbolize the idea that even though life can be suffocating (snake) and we face many hardships, with effort and dedication, we can break through and find the sweeter side of life (strawberries). I started off like a deer staring in headlights when I started to mold the hand. It took just about 10 tries of smashing and restarting to get a decent foundation for my hand.

After weeks of sculpting, I begin to make my snake. I positioned it so it looked ready to attack the hand, with its fangs and tongue out, but is intercepted by the sweet strawberries. Hours were dedicated to carving out the scales one by one to make them detailed enough for my liking. I used many skills learned in ceramics to show life in a simple piece.

  • By exploring and expressing my creativity, I'm able to channel my energy into something I enjoy. It's an amazing way to unplug from the noise & focus on what matters most. I'm more productive and creative in my other endeavors when I make time to explore & express my creativity.
