Butterfly

Linen F.

  • “Butterfly” is a symbol of the connection between the children of immigrant families and their parents. This artwork, combined with in-real-life references, depicts my own immigration experience.

Today, whenever I walk by the “Ming Hair Studio” in Chinatown, I remember my time living there just across the street. To me, Ming Hair Studio holds my childhood memory and admiration for my mom as a wonder woman.

With a photo of the hair salon my mom worked in, I decided to begin with the oil pastel brush which gives me the whimsical feeling of color pencils, then blend it with watercolor to convey a lively, smooth, and soft sensation. I take more revisions after each draft and polish it up with a bit of highlight.

  • Creativity is a word I only associate with Beethoven, Van Gogh, Shakespeare, and Picasso. They are all inspiring people, but I get most of my life inspiration from the people around me. I found purpose in recording memorable events and people, turning them into something I can revive years later.
