You Are My Other World

An enormous influence on my art comes from my experience with American culture as a Chinese immigrant. It is evidenced by the concept I explore in my paintings and the juxtaposition from comparing my childhood in China to my lifestyle here in San Francisco. Additionally, a lot of my ideas are inspired by my hardships of being the daughter of a low-income single mother or the expectations I carry as a first-generation American in my family. However, what I truly want to deliver through my artwork are the problematic pressures of meeting the demanding expectations of being a high-performing student as well as how I am perceived by others in pursuing art.
My recent work echoes my frustrations and confusion toward issues my generation encounter and combat; such as social norms, our responsibilities as young adults, and my response to all of this. In order to achieve the feeling of unpredictability and uncertainties in my paintings, I like to take a more improvisational approach and decide in the moment on what technique, brushstroke, or subjects to add or take out on the canvas. It excites me because my painting is constantly evolving instead of remaining stagnant. In a sense, my painting process reflects my ongoing journey in life with its ups and downs and questions that I acquire along the way. Although my paintings are deeply personal, it is my hope that viewers will be able to relate to my work and find a sense of catharsis in realizing how interlinked our lives really are.

My art evolve around the way I see life and the experiences I have had with it. Drawing is a way for me to process and destress from all the responsibilities and the fast pace lifestyle I face once I leave my canvas.
