Burnout

2022, colored pencils and pen, 9x12.
I drew inspiration from my own experience as a student at a highly competitive high school. My work uncovers the unseen downside of the academic pressure cooker culture — burnout — that’s buried beneath the superficial façade of gleaming resumes, perfect grades, and impressive extracurriculars.
I ripped up a couple pages of notes and glued them together to create a collage for the background. I then took a photo of myself doing homework, and used it as a reference a I drew a self portrait. The shirt's burnt orange color represents stress and frustration. The complementary blue color of the writing and pencil tie the background and foreground together. After finishing my drawing, I cut it out using an x-acto knife and pasted it atop the collage to create a cohesive work centered around the theme of academic pressure.

Practicing visual art allows me to cultivate my curiosity. I gain unique insights from exploring topics of interest from an artistic perspective. To me, art is a resource for examining topics, a tool for drawing connections, and a platform for sharing my findings.
