A Crimson Death Brings Well Dressed Inhabitants

Asha T.

  • This piece depicts a reality in which climate change has destroyed the earth to the point of no return. Because of this cats have taken control of what remains and replaced humans as the dominant animal, possibly because they are the most resistant, or the last organisms left. They have deliberately donned traditional, "human-attire" from the early 20th century, pieces that help them seem distinguished and closer to how they view the legacy of the human race. The cats also ride seashell cars, replacing the, once loved by humanity, motorized vehicle.

The red sky in the piece offers a juxtaposition of a healthy blue sky, suggesting the degree to which the damage has been done. The moons shifting in size represent the passing in time and the change that has occurred. The wavering road also adds to this idea of a strange earth. Again taking a concept we are visually familiar with, like a road, and bending it to suggest a distorted reality.

Overall the piece is meant to invoke a sense of curiosity in the viewer as related to the power of nature around us. The piece calls into the question the docile role we have handed to animals, and in doing this the metaphor translates to the docile role we hand to people around us. The piece also questions the way in which we treat those we deem unintelligent and the possible consequences of those actions resulting in undesirable outcomes.

  • As a young person I am constantly changing and, at times, unsure of how to move forward or how to process parts of my life. Being creative helps me to explore my own feelings and interpretations and furthermore better understand myself and the world around me.
