A Briny Demolition

Sam L.

  • This is a sculptural piece inspired by urban architecture and fantasy. Within this piece, I tried to capture a sense of calmness and order on one side, and movement and chaos on the side with the octopus. Since the submission is limited to one photo only, there is a fire escape on the left side of the piece and the pipes on the back that are not pictured. I used the slab technique to build the base of my structure and I carefully sculpted the octopus, windows, pipes, and fire escape using a combination of slab and coil techniques. I used sgraffito to create the illusion of cracks and I used a silver paint pen to create highlights in some areas.

  • Being able to express my creativity is a necessity for me. When I am in the ceramics studio creating, all worries and sources of stress that may have affected me during the day simply disappear for the hour and a half that I am sculpting and glazing. This allows me to be much more present in life.
