Substance A

I wrote Substance A as an intimate look into relationships broken apart by overdosing, as well as a metaphorical and psychological deep dive into the minds of those who fall victim to the rage of intoxicated partners. As I always desire for my art to express genuine and real emotions in fictional people, for this piece, I wanted to humanize and tell the stories of those who are often stigmatized as weak or naive for staying with those that harm them or not halting the relationship. These victims are well aware of the fact that the relationship is harmful; however, there is an abundance of reasons that they continue to persevere through the pain, making them far stronger than most suspect. With the story's antagonist, I delved into the backstory and motivations behind those who lash out towards their partners, specifically in the fact that he put other’s lives at risk by risking his own life under the influence. Overall, I hoped to respectfully delve into this topic that is often seen as too difficult to discuss, telling the tale of a unique, stylistic, and fleshed out world with fleshed out characters in the short poem format.

Creativity is placing genuine human emotions into imaginary circumstances. Artistic expression of these fictional conflicts, and the overcoming of them, can encourage others and give them more courage to persevere through their own, real lives.
