Space

Kai C.

  • I have written many songs over the last two or three years (in my repertoire, I have about 35 full/finished tunes and hundreds of small ideas) in styles ranging from jazz to rock, folk, and more. Songwriting has been a hugely important creative outlet for me, being useful in emotional expression and communication with others.

Over quarantine, I got used to generating new ideas daily, but with less time to compose in this current school year, I often find myself up late writing music after finishing work. I wrote this song (my submission) after rolling out of bed one night at 2 am (it's how most of my ideas start). Yes, I often go to school very tired, but there has never been a doubt in my mind that every night I make the right decision; the feeling that draws me to the piano makes going back to sleep simply impossible. While I don't personally think that this submission is one of my best songs (musically), I experimented a lot in the recording process (it has the best recording quality out of my list of recorded songs), and I think it provides a good look into my skill level as a songwriter. I would theoretically like to submit a jazz composition too, but I don't have anything recorded--I would need to put together a larger ensemble to play the music live.

The song is titled "Space," and it features a friend of mine (also a senior at Albany high school) named Emily L. (I sing the verses, and Emily takes over on the choruses). I had a lot of fun editing in Logic (spending many many hours on it), and again, while the music itself isn't too complex, I tried to make up for it a bit with the orchestration/recording quality. Thank you for listening--I hope you like it.

  • To me, creativity is self-expression. One of the beauties of creativity is that it isn't something that is restricted to certain activities; while I particularly enjoy expression through jazz piano and songwriting, creativity is more than just a "side" of who I am--it is present in any endeavor.
