Ford Cobra Teapot

Kyle W.

  • Throughout my life, I have always had a creative side—drawing, painting, 3D construction. However, it wasn't until high school that I found my true creative passion: Ceramics. For the past four years, ceramics has been my primary form of creative expression, with daily classes and time spent outside of school. I enjoy working with my hands, so ceramics has always allowed me to express many of the ideas I have inside my head, through my hands.

I believe this project is one of my culminating pieces, employing techniques I have learned from the past years. My original idea was to create a teapot, however, I wanted to add a creative spin to the simple designs I initially had. So, I decided to combine a simple teapot design with a more complex sports car. I chose to draw inspiration from a vintage sports car, the Ford Cobra.

My creation process was fairly complex. It began with forming the basic shape of the Cobra with slab pieces. To create a smoother shape with more curved sides, I used soft clay and molded it to the slab piece. I then cut out a box for the seats, steering wheels, dashboard, and related details. I then created the small details and added them to their correct places. Ultimately, I created a ceramics form that was part teapot part Ford Cobra.

  • Creativity incorporates a number of factors such as brainstorming, modeling, construction, and post-construction changes. It also means having the flexibility to adapt to opportunities and challenges that arise during creation. And finally, it means having part of my own identity in each piece.
