Ceramics (Clay tiles, glaze, wood)

  • For the past 17 years of my life, my family has always called me by my nickname, Yumi. Although it holds no true correlation to my real name, I hold it dear to me regardless for its reminder of my family’s role in my life. The childhood that I idealize and look back on fondly was made memorable because of my family’s presence. I took heavy inspiration from my favorite childhood film, “My Neighbor Totoro,” in my mosaic. This is evident through the soot sprites on my emblemata and Totoro-esque design of my nickname. In addition, I used a pastel color scheme to reflect the mood of “childlike wonder” in the film itself, which brings about feelings of heavy nostalgia for me.

  • To me, creativity is to express yourself wholly and personally, even through if it means being vulnerable. Many people choose to express their creativity through dance, creative writing, painting, etc. My personal medium is through ceramics.
