Worn Wisdom

Ashlynn W.

  • “Everybody makes mistakes. That’s why they put erasers on pencils.” We’ve all heard this saying, but have you noticed that every pencil has more lead than eraser? This suggests that there isn’t much room for mistakes. However, these mishaps are not mishaps at all, they are revisions, valuable opportunities for growth. I collected various erasers from friends and family and photographed each individually. Each eraser is well worn and unique in its own way, each telling a story of time spent correcting, learning, and growing. Accidents are seen as something to minimize—to erase. But creating something incredible requires time and many attempts. I want this piece to tell people to accept their mistakes as part of the process— something to learn and accept, not to hide or be ashamed of. To create is to embrace imperfection, to fearlessly erase, and to trust that the journey will result in something remarkable.

  • Creativity is something spontaneous, something that can’t be forced. It is a form of expression and originality.
