Slava Otsu

Slava Otsu is the first ever solo I have choreographed on myself. Inspired by several different pieces of music, I started out on Garage band where I learned how to mix them together. Having this creative freedom around the song was extremely helpful during my process, I was able to tweak the song as I went, shortening, lengthening, adding drums where I felt it was needed. I wanted the piece to feel reactionary to the music, the mystique of the choir and cello always influencing the movement. It was a long process, I didn’t know when inspiration would arise. Sometimes I would be in my math class and have to go outside to film a snippet of choreography I had come up with in my head. Choreographing reveals aspects about your artistry that you didn’t know existed. It’s been wonderful getting to know myself on this deeper level.

Creativity to me means experiencing life to the fullest, indulging in humanity, and letting those experiences influence my artistry. I strive to escape my own echo chamber and challenge myself to relate to the regular person through my medium of art, that is when I feel most creative.
