Guided by Breath

Sasha M.

  • My self-choreographed piece, Guided by breath, represents focusing on the present moment through my journey of managing anxiety with breathwork. This technique is woven into my choreography. Throughout my choreography, I focus on my breath, letting each inhalation and exhalation guide my movements. The piece not only tells my personal story but also demonstrates the connection between breath and dance, showing how simple breathing techniques can calm both the mind and body. When I first began using deep breathing to manage stress, it felt unnatural and even frightening. This is why I introduced tension and shaking early on in my dance. Shallow quick breaths become heavy; unsteady motions become expansive and controlled, as I breathe more and more deeply. Despite my growing confidence, challenges remain, as seen in moments where I lose momentum and fall.

  • I believe that creativity means pushing yourself past your limits and using imagination to think outside of the box to achieve something different, and special.
