seeds of desegregation

Watercolor paint, and ink on watercolor paper

  • My iconography is a watermelon and segregated water fountain that only Black people were forced to use during segregation, when African Americans were prohibited from using the same water fountains as white people. I chose the watermelon because in Palestine displaying the Palestinian flag was once illegal. Since the watermelon has the same color combo as the colors of the Palestinian flag, they used the watermelon to resist unjust laws and represent their flagI think the water fountain is a similar symbol of resistance because even though black people faced discrimination in the Jim Crow south, they resisted racist laws and fought for their rights by using “Whites Only” bus seats, lunch counters, and drinking fountains. The water droplets are turning into seeds that are growing into a watermelon. This shows the interconnections and the shared resistance and solidarity of both groups of oppressed people.

  • I think creativity means to be able to share what ever is on your mind without anyone to judge you for what it. I also think its a feeling that people get when they feel good about themselves.
