Rooted in Insecurity

  • In my piece, I aim to depict how the need for social validation is rooted in human nature. This is portrayed by using weeds as symbols of insecurity. I chose weeds to represent insecurity as they are often looked down upon compared to flowers, even though the only difference between them lies in physical appearance. While weeds are common and have duller colors, flowers are more vibrant and rare, leading society to place a higher value on them. In my painting, the figure attempts to remove the weeds from their body with gardening shears. This portrays trying to hide parts of themself that they feel does not align with society’s standard attractiveness. However, because insecurity is innate, simply cutting off the weeds is only a temporary solution. Because the weeds are rooted in their body, they will eventually grow back. Thus, embracing our natural appearance is the only solution.

  • Creativity means being able to express personal opinions and experiences through different forms of media. For instance, a drawing could express someone’s personal identity through different styles and techniques in art. For more figurative topics, one could make their drawing more abstract to coordinate with emotions the piece evokes.
