  • I wrote this piece to process and cement in my memory the people that I met and formed connections with on an educational travel program in Thailand this summer. Mæ, is about the woman I stayed with for a week in a village in Northern Thailand. I had been away from my family for almost a month when I met her. This woman nurtured and cared for me and one of my peers and gave me an experience of home in a place where I felt so disconnected from my family back in California. This experience of being able to form a connection and companionship with someone when we cannot communicate smoothly with language taught me a lot about what actually brings people together. Through this poem, I was able to immortalize my gratitude for Mæ and explore what I feel is the basis of human connection, care and emotion.

  • Creativity is having an outlet where your voice is the subject. I choose to show my creativity through poetry because it gives me a space to process my life experiences and my opinions and emotions in reaction to the world around me. It is the purest expression of my identity.
