  • This is a piece I wrote for the Marin MOCA Ekphrastic challenge in my Creative Writing class, where we picked a piece of art and wrote something inspired by it. The painting I chose was by Sandra Cassayre, and it was of an orange folding chair with a floral print on it against a white wall, that had faint stains on it similar to the colors on the chair. It reminded me of something you would find in the parking lot of a cheap motel. A scene came into my mind, of a young girl outside, bored out of her mind, while her mother smokes a cigarette. I wanted to know more about these two characters and the setting. What is the temperature like outside? Does the girl have a dad? What is he like? It was really interesting to explore characters inspired by a piece of art.

  • For me, creativity is about breaking the rules of convention, taking risks, making mistakes, and having fun.
