Hypnosis- Ian Clarke

Pooja V.

  • My performance is essentially myself under a veil, under hypnosis; it releases my emotions in a way an alleged unaltered mind never would. As a classically trained flautist, I learned to let my creativity flower in this piece, to culminate in raw expression over technicality. Throughout the performance, I articulated my own desires even if they were against flute convention; some notes were intentionally ‘airy,’ and pitch bent as avenues for myself to do more than just play, to sing. Ian Clarke, known for his powerful, introspective combinations of lyricism and technicality, is written all over ’Hypnosis.’ While performing, I hope to do him, to do the composition, justice- but more than this, my work invites introspection, dream-like wonder amongst our over-stimulated superficial world. By invoking hypnosis both in myself and in my listener, my innate artistic desires flowered.

  • Creativity, seen through the lense of classical music, means striking a remarkable balance between the old and the undeniably new. It’s using the world around me, the notes on the page, to transcend anything I could hope to express otherwise; it is to flower amidst the harshness of ordinary expression.
