Gargoyles

Gargoyles by Lowell Liebermann is an intricate piece that perfectly captures the otherworldly charm of its namesake. It is a work full of unique contrast, with the shimmering 16th notes evoking a sense of continuous, restless movement, while the main melody intertwined in between creates a beautiful and almost surreal feel. Together, it embodies the slightly eerie and unsettling nature of a gargoyle overlooking an old Gothic cathedral. Performing this piece requires a deep understanding of not only technique, but also the story and mood that Liebermann wanted to convey. Playing the cascading 16th notes while simultaneously maintaining the slower, peaceful melody was quite challenging, as the technical difficulty can easily become overwhelming. However, my artistic process was more heavily focused around conveying the mysterious and evocative spirit of a gargoyle through music.

Creativity, to me, is the ability to blend imagination and innovation to produce something that is uniquely my own. With piano, creativity allows me to take a composition and integrate my own feelings and emotions into it, which provides me with a versatile form of self expression.
