Cardboard, acrylic, oil pastel

  • Bright paint on a daunting blank background draws attention to two central figures: a child and a Neanderthal. Showing a palette of thick acrylic paint on tape and cardboard, I emphasize the raw nature of creation by turning the process into part of the artwork. Pretty funny, a photo of what it took for a kid to paint a kid painting—creation inception! I was Inspired by Picasso’s famous remark after viewing cave paintings:”We’ve invented nothing”. My work reflects the shared human instinct to create, spanning all eras. Radiating scribbles from the child symbolize this innate ability, connecting us to our predecessors. I aim to reframe Picasso’s remark into an optimistic statement —the fact that humans have created art for the same reasons, and at similar levels since the dawn of humanity is proof that creativity is an enduring, universal trait which connects us at our most innocent and primitive forms.

  • creativity means using unconventional materials (I like to use cardboard and other recyclables), and feeling free to tap into a playful side of myself. Like Dr. Kakkis’ reference to a blank paper, creativity means making something from nothing-- for me, in a way combines unconventionality and childishness with technicality.
