This piece of mixed media I made using cutouts of words from the dictionary with a ballet slipper on top to portray the societal expectations put on dancers to perform and succeed. As a former dancer, I have experienced these pressures, whether them being about body image, performance, or simply living up to expectations. All the words in the background are all representative of words used to put pressure and make dancers want to live up to these terms. The weight that words have on our society especially in highly performance-based sports can be detrimental to athletes mental and physical health.

I believe that creativity is the ability to let go of expectations and let yourself express your own opinions and beliefs through artwork. It is about expressing yourself through something that will connect with others. Sharing your personal message and journey through art is creativity.
