Bohemian Rhapsody arr. Jake Shimabukuro

Renn S.

  • The ukulele connects me to my Hawaiian roots—small, but significant. In my family, this instrument is one of the last remnants of our dying Hawaiian culture, a reminder of where we come from. I chose to play Bohemian Rhapsody, arranged by Jake Shimabukuro, because it blends worlds: the ukulele, a symbol of Hawaiian tradition, and the iconic Western music of Queen. This combination reflects my own identity—bridging cultures while making something unique. The ukulele may be simple, but its voice is powerful. I pushed the instrument beyond its expected limits, learning to balance and blend fingerpicking with strumming. This arrangement challenged me, both technically and emotionally. For me, it’s more than just a performance; it’s honoring heritage while finding my own unique voice in a modern world.

  • To me, creativity means combining inspirations to create something new. Nothing is made from nothing—every idea blends influences that come before it. In music, this combination of styles and sounds is what makes it powerful, turning familiar elements into something fresh, meaningful, and uniquely expressive.
