The Weatherman

My inspiration for this piece stemmed from a recording of my vocal harmonies that sounded eerily like a synth pad. With an entire section of guitars, synths, basses, harmonies, and percussion supporting my lead vocals, this was my most ambitious personal project. My primary focus was to create an immersive listening experience, with many layers. I did this by contrasting textured, noisy synths with lighter, more ambient pads directly after, giving the track a sense of space. I used both acoustic and electric guitar, both helping with the melody and chord progression. A synth and guitar, panned apart, make up the counter melody that roughly follows the vocal melody. When the harmonies drop out in the second verse, a sense of openness is created in their absence. The playful lyrics are based on a character that controls the weather, but is impossible to find.

To me, creativity is the ability to express one’s ideas through a medium without friction, allowing for a true portrayal of personal creativity. In writing music, my intuition in melody and composition balances with my expertise in music production, allowing me to effortlessly lay my ideas down.
