Ascent Up Mt. August

In this piece, I decided to base my writing off of the motif of a small step down followed by a larger jump down and then a small step back up. The non-specificity of this motif allowed me a lot of freedom in terms of the content of the piece, while still lending it a sense of cohesiveness. Additionally, this piece is my first ever where I have orchestrated woodwinds, so I wanted to experiment with emphasizing different instruments and textures through the piece. My composition was mostly based in musical ideas and sounds, with little thought to narrative or images evoked. Actually, prior to submitting this piece for consideration, I did not have a name for it. The idea of a mountain was helpfully suggested by my father when I asked him for help in coming up with a name.

Creativity is a process whereby I can make something from nothing. Sure I might have a starting point upon which to base my creativity, but I still started with something and then ended with something else. Creativity is significant exactly because of this: it’s how new stuff is made.
