Camelid Sacrum

Diego Q.

  • While most of my compositions are heavily based in improvisation, and are often fluid in form, with this piece I wanted to try creating a structured arrangement for a full quartet. Doing so required taking a motif I came up with and splitting up what I played with my left and right hand amongst different instruments. In this composition I also attempted to explore different opportunities for rhythmic counterpoint which can be heard in the hits the rhythm section plays throughout the melody of the song. When composing this song, I was also very keen to ensure that the melody dictated the harmonies I wrote, not vice versa. I chose to do this in order to maintain the strong motific quality of my melody. Writing this piece also required that I create clear and concise lead sheets for my fellow bandmates, and to consider the ranges of their instruments.

  • As someone who has difficulty expressing themselves verbally, being creative is an important outlet for my emotions. Many times I will simply sit at the piano and play whatever comes to mind. As I improvise, emotions flow through my body, and I am able to feel the most like myself.
