Enigmatic Alley

This photo was taken on my iPhone 12 during my trip to Italy. Italy has many beautiful, narrow alleys all around, especially in Rome, where this photo is. You never know what cool, crazy, captivating, or candid moment you'll walk into if you turn the corner of an alley. So, as I was walking with my family back from dinner, I noticed that the setting of this photo was super unique and intricate, having graffiti on the walls, the dim lit light above, and the casual man sitting on his Vespa, all on top of the signature cobblestone streets that expand across Italy. The scene felt so intriguing, so I had to capture the moment with my phone. Even though it isn't with a professional camera, I think taking the photo with an iPhone captured the feeling and gravity of the moment. I titled it "Enigmatic Alley" to encapsulate the randomness of moments that can spur at any moment, which can be weird, funny, or poignant. As an advanced photography student, I am proud of this photo, even though of course it was taken with my beat-up iPhone 12.

Put the Fire Out

Put the Fire Out visually represents the quiet and simplicity within the bustling city of San Francisco. I think many people have given San Francisco a bad association ever since the city lost its true essence. Busy streets on Union Square, now empty. Families and loved ones having picnic at Dolores Park, filling all the spaces, now the grass is visibly clear of people. We have all lost connection and created divided communities when we should be encouraging others to create a better San Francisco. The fire is the hate and constant divide we are all at fault for but, if we work together to build a better, safer community, we can eliminate underline hatred and violence.

Unkept Door

I journeyed around a block until I found the most interesting unkept house and tried to find the most interesting aspect of it. To me it happened to be the doorway blocked by various colorful obstacles creating a spectacle.

Architectural

I have been doing photography for about 2 years now, and was completely torn on which photographs to use. I have landscapes, low shutter speed pans on sunsets that I love, and tons and tons of architecture. These particular photos were taken at a worn down, abandoned high school that I came across while walking around with friends.

One Small Step

During a weekend outing in San Francisco, there was the usual buzz and activity along the Great Highway, with cyclists and beachgoers and children playing on the beach. Along the beach, there were many people from all walks of life lounging, playing, and swimming in the sea. A particular scene I saw in that moment struck me as interesting, a moment I wanted to capture. A powerful contrast between the subject and the mighty sea, a baby taking its first few steps from the gentle land into the vast, chaotic ocean stretching as far as the eye can see, seems to symbolize the first step into a long journey. The parent watches from behind, watching the baby’s progress and for their safety. Perhaps I will never know who this person is or who they’ll become, but hopefully they’ll be able to face life and their journeys head on like they did when they first stepped into the sea.

The Silhouettes of Sundown

I originally took this picture for a project in my photography class but since then the picture has stuck with me. I think it is so beautiful, the way the light diminishes the trees to just a dark outline. I think it represents in life how some people are overshadowed by others. The angle is from a corner almost like the person is hiding in the shadows. Like someone is being pushed into a corner because the light of someone else is too bright. I love the way the light has a sort of ombre effect because it looks so pretty and shows almost layers to the light like it is a mixture of many things.

shutting down

In the soft glow of the setting sun, I captured a fleeting moment of peace. In such a busy city a second of darkness perfectly displayed the approaching nightfall. The photograph unfolds like a canvas painted with cool blue hues, as the sun quickly sets. The passing cars enforce the notion of a return home after a long day, a relaxing drive. The play of shadows and highlights creates a mesmerizing dance, creating a peaceful scene. The stillness of the photo captures the beauty of life, city, and nature. This photograph offers a timeless glimpse into the quiet magic that exists all around us.

Split

In my sustained investigation focused on shadows, I took a picture of my dad holding a lightsaber in the middle of his face. I wanted to create the illusion that the darkness behind him was engulfing him to the point where only the lightsaber was the only source of light illuminating him and the picture itself.

The Dynamic Dons

The Dynamic Dons was created at a volleyball game during the 2023/24 season. The night were the Dons needed to win to make it to playoffs. And with a hard fought battle all the way to the end, the Dons pulled out on top. Through the hurt and tears, the pure emotions flowed out from not only the players, but the students and families that were attending the game. The electric energy from everyone there, made the building shake. The Dynamic Dons was an emotional and electric moment.

tiny people

I took this photo during a school trip to coastal Oregon. I had never been before, so I was so excited to bring my camera and take photos! On the last day of the trip, we went to Multnomah Falls to see the Benson Footbridge, a popular destination. Though the bridge was beautiful, I was fascinated more by the view while standing on it and looking down. I shot this photo on my 85mm prime lens, so there the view from up top is “zoomed in” in my photo; in reality, everything below was even smaller. As both a photographer and environmentalist, seeing different people at peace in nature gave me a sense of immense joy: my motivation to take this photo. Every time I look at this photo, I pause as my mind runs wild, inventing backstories for each tiny person—visor-lady on the bench, the brown-jacketed person standing alone very far back, the family of hikers, and others. I hope this photo encourages others to have fun doing the same!

Snowy Summer Mountains

Creativity isn’t something you can force on yourself but rather something that your subconscious mind sees that you don’t. It is within nature that you begin to notice the small details such as the light, plants, and animals that roam around you. Within nature photographs, a journey takes place in which the artist walks for hours to find a perfect view of nature and scenery. Waiting for the right moment for an animal to show up and to complete the puzzle. Throughout the hike with the exhaustion involved the top is the only thing you can focus on reaching. Not even caring about the low water supply you have just have a feeling to make it to the top and see what was hidden. I’ve been searching for the right photo to snap a photo and on this trip to Sequoia it took three days just to find this view. In the middle of the forest, only the birds chirp hearing only your breath as you walk up the hills.

Sugar

I took this image after burning a pie. I liked the way the melted sugar created highlights, and the abstract nature of the depth created by the lattice. My process consists of noticing a detail I like and then finding a way to frame it. Despite the burnt sugar, the pie was quite good.
