Enigmatic Alley

Matthew L.

  • This photo was taken on my iPhone 12 during my trip to Italy. Italy has many beautiful, narrow alleys all around, especially in Rome, where this photo is. You never know what cool, crazy, captivating, or candid moment you'll walk into if you turn the corner of an alley. So, as I was walking with my family back from dinner, I noticed that the setting of this photo was super unique and intricate, having graffiti on the walls, the dim lit light above, and the casual man sitting on his Vespa, all on top of the signature cobblestone streets that expand across Italy. The scene felt so intriguing, so I had to capture the moment with my phone. Even though it isn't with a professional camera, I think taking the photo with an iPhone captured the feeling and gravity of the moment. I titled it "Enigmatic Alley" to encapsulate the randomness of moments that can spur at any moment, which can be weird, funny, or poignant. As an advanced photography student, I am proud of this photo, even though of course it was taken with my beat-up iPhone 12.

  • Creativity to me means expressing yourself in any way that evokes feelings and emotion. Creativity comes best to me in photography--I love being able to use my camera to capture a special moment in time. It's so powerful to know the impact a single picture can have.
