Fluid Thoughts

Drew K.

Colored Pencil and Graphite

  • While crafting this piece, I thought about representing myself and who I am, as well as who I was and who I plan or want to be. Essentially, I want this to be a marker of who I am in this specific period of time, and my thoughts of myself at this important junction of my life as a highschooler. In this piece, a [dimensions of paper] piece of paper is the backdrop for colored pencils, graphite, and markers as mediums. I tried to include a mix of obvious representations of who I was through symbols, objects, etc., in addition to abstract ideas that require quite a bit of thought from the audience. In this piece, I try to showcase my heritage and how, more recently, the Bay Area has shaped my life, and how I hope to shape it in the future. Amid the negative portrayals of the Bay Area, I want to bring awareness to how this area can positively impact someone’s life. Furthermore, I try to show how self-portraits are about our internal and external selves, and how they are fluid and ever-changing. Lastly, I want to leave viewers with a feeling that we all hold more than the eye can see.

  • Creativity, to me, means the expression of oneself in order to improve the world as a whole. Creativity is also a way to show one's identity to others and what one hopes to bring to the world.
