Together, Apart. Together

  • "Together, Apart. Together."

This piece meditates on the cognitive and biological capacity we have to connect others; our neurobiological wiring allows us to feel and understand what is happening in others’ bodies (e.g. our shared understanding of pain and emotions - Jamil Zaki). Through different physical layers, I explored the spectrum of connection. However, the two figures—my friend and I—are absorbed in our own digital realms, illustrating the replacement of connection with technology. Ultimately, even with the illusion of separation in the piece and polarization and violence in the world today, I hope to communicate the innate interconnection between humans.

  • Having lived in China for 7 years, I ground my paintings and drawings in my cultural identity and navigation of different spaces. I often explore landscapes and culture as identity—illustrating my longing to return to a sense of home—and reflect on my relationship with myself, others, and the world.
