The Monster Bank

Elektra H.

  • This piece is called The Monster Bank, and the medium is clay and glaze. This was the first piece I had made after being forced to take a year break in between my ceramics one and two courses. I needed to get back into the mindset of ceramics, so this project was definitely a reset project. This was designed as a sculptural piggy bank, so if someone was to put money in through the monsters mouth then they would have to smash it open to be able to get the money back. This was done intentionally, as it is meant to represent how money isn’t always assessable so be careful with what you put your money towards because otherwise the “monsters” will eat it up. The project is made up of 2 hollow forms, one being the head and the other being the body. The mouth of the monster is the opening of the piggy bank and the divots within his body create depth within the glaze. I, as well, added texture onto the horns and his broken horn to emphasize it being broken to the viewer.

  • Creativity positively impacts my mental health tremendously. It allows me to have a place to express my emotions each day or towards a topic. The most important part about being able to explore different mediums is the growth of my abilities I notice every day. I can’t imagine my life without art.
