Take My Hand

"Take My Hand" was shot on 35mm black and white film, which I developed and lightly retouched in Lightroom. I created this image when I was in the process of learning how to work with film. "Take My Hand" is an experiment in analog as much as it is an experiment with light; the use of a reflective mirror in this image, paired with the shallow depth of field, allows me to thwart viewers' perception of the background. At the same time, the mirror reflects something out of frame, beyond viewers' reach but still visible through the eternal return of the mirror.
This image captures a simple moment of longing for a mutual human connection. It is inspired by our collective yearning for others, for deeper relationships, and still, for our inability to embrace or be embraced by others to fulfill our greatest expectations and desires. "Take My Hand" is an ode to missed connections, to missed opportunities, to all the words we were never brave enough to say. But as the figures' hands are mere reflections, and as their bodies are out of frame, the mirror reflects only how the fullness of expectation is met by an empty silence.

Creativity is a way for me to grapple with my experience as an individual living in a grander world. The medium of photography specifically allows me to see the world in smaller, kinder ways.
