Missed Connections

Madeleine M.

  • As my time in high school comes to an end, I often find myself wondering about the future of my relationships. What does “growing apart” really look like? What happens when people have different expectations for a relationship? What is the difference between leaving and being left behind?

This play explores these questions from multiple perspectives. Using documentary theater techniques, I studied the speech patterns of my family and friends to create realistic voices for my characters. I wanted Jessie and Sage’s relationship to be intentionally ambiguous because the emotions explored in this piece can occur in all types of relationships. Whether in a platonic or romantic relationship, many people have had similar experiences to the one depicted in this play, and I want the audience to be forced to sit with the other person's perspective, even if it's uncomfortable.

  • In our constantly moving world, creativity allows me to slow down and explore my emotions. I believe that the purpose of art is to build empathy and understanding, therefore, creativity gives me hope for a better future.
