Soul Key

EM V.

  • I decided to use acrylics for the majority of the painting. Once I had thought up an idea and taken a reference photo, I would paint, not caring whether it was a replica of my reference but a vague visualization of myself as an artist. While painting, I minimized my color palette to pink, teal, white, and black. I'm using unblended, patchy shading to show the early stage of life I'm in. The hints of soft pink underneath the eyes and the tips of the fingers draw focus to what an artist's most important senses are: touch and hold. Hands to hold my tools and eyes to see, adapt, and overcome. I use a dry brush to add texture to my hands, which frame the image and center the eyes. Adding dulled periwinkle to the areas with hard shadows encroaching on hues of teal will show the intermixing of normalcy and drive.

  • The eye may be the key to the soul, but art has been my key to portraying and delving into sections of myself that I had yet to examine. Reprogramming my thought process, I calm my nerves with every stroke of my pen, brush, tool, and breath.
