For this artwork, I decided to capture an image of my bedroom from November 2021. I think a room can really represent who someone is, they're very lived in and very telling. I'm at a stage in my life where I'm sitting somewhere between my childhood self and who I'm becoming and I think that experience shines in this artwork. My walls are painted a light lilac, there's a baby picture of me sitting on my dresser and I have flowers on my rug. Yet as well, there's a phone charger on my floor, a jacket hanging on the back of my desk chair and records, and a school backpack on the floor. It's a bit messy, but it captures exactly who I was at that time of my life, and where I feel I am as a teenager. I worked on this piece with colored pencils on tinted paper, building up layers in the carpet, the walls, and the curtains while paying attention to the lighting and reflections in the room. Near the end of my process, I worked to put in the little details that really pull the room together and make it feel lived in.

Exploring and expressing my creativity gives me the chance to take a breath. Creating art lets me take a break and forget about other problems or stressors for a moment. I really enjoy that I'm able to capture where I am in life whenever I make art and whatever emotions I'm experiencing.
