Same Coin

  • This piece is all about opposition. The two halves of the painting represent two states of mind. The left side represents all of the impulse thoughts, daily stressors, and anxieties which comes with school, work, or other responsibilities. The right side represents a calmer, more at peace state of mind which comes when allow ourselves to stop working for a moment and focus on something that makes us happy. I tried to communicate these feelings through my brush strokes and choice of color. The left side has much sharper brush strokes and much brighter colors with differing textures. In contrast to this, the right side is comprised of cooler and softer colors along with more homogeneous textures. Despite this obvious contrast, I chose to also include the textures and some of the colors from each side blending into each other. I decided to include this because no matter how different these states of being are, they still come from the same place- oneself.

  • Art is very cathartic for me. Whenever Iā€™m stressed because of school or work I know that I can always return to my sketchbook as a form of relaxation and enjoyment.
