poems of the overtaken

Maddy B.

  • These two poems are extremely intimate snapshots into an experience I had with sexual assault. Poetry was how I processed this traumatic experience; I tried to tread lightly with my words out of respect for possible triggers for readers, but also tried to evoke the extreme discomfort I felt during my experience. This writing process was painful, but cathartic. I wrote these poems over the course of a month, in the wake of my experience, so they are very fresh, raw, and reactionary pieces. I hope that others can understand my point of view and feel seen/heard through my writing.

  • Expressing creativity through poetry is the way I process difficult experiences and big emotions. Writing is my way of taking what I'm feeling, negative or positive, and turning it into a timeless vignette that will evoke whatever feeling I was feeling when I wrote the piece.
