New Years 2023

Julia B.

  • I wrote this piece responding to a prompt for one of my college applications and it turned into something I’m really proud of. The prompt was “Write a short film script about two different people getting stuck on an elevator during New Years Eve.” I wanted to do a comedy, so I came up with the idea of a well intentioned (but kind of stupid) middle age guy getting stuck with a murderer in an elevator. Once I came up with the initial concept, I started to think about how I could make the dialogue funny and unexpected. I thought it might be cool if the middle age guy had a thick Minnesotan accent and that he was going to a cosplay convention, and also if they murderer was covered in blood; the reader/audience would assume that he hurt someone, especially at the ending when he gets taken down by the cops.

My artistic process can sometimes be difficult for me, especially because I have a hard time focusing, but I started with an outline of each scene; what their name where (Carl and Kevin), which one would go into the elevator first, how the conversation would happen, how the idea of New Years is brought up, why Carl’s going to a convention, all while making every action and line of dialogue in line with their characters.

  • Writing allows me to express myself through words and imagery. I'm not always the best at vocalizing my emotions, my love, my pain, but my art help me convey my identity and personhood to the world.
